This week has been a busy one in ESI. We started out the week working on our Pioneers of Alberta farm project. Students were asked to find something from pioneer times that started with a different letter of the alphabet. After reading A Pioneer Alphabet students used Google Drive to research their own letters. We worked on our digital citizenship by making sure the images were free to use, share and modify. With practice most of the students are able to use the research function to find an item. We then used the predictive text function on the read and write for google program to help when we wrote our sentences. Students drew a picture of their item and we put them together into a squash book. Our alphabet reads:
A - art - students used chalk to draw.
B- bison - all the animals died from hunting.
C - cup and ball - a toy made of wood.
D - donuts - a way for pioneers to have a treat and use up fat stored.
E - eel - caught in rivers and made into pies.
F - flail - a tool used to separate the wheat from the grain.
G - garden - vegetables were grown by hand.
H - hunting - pioneers used guns to hunt animals.
I - income - money was not usually paid, items were traded.
J - junket - a wagon with sled on the bottom for winter.
K - kettle - a kind of pot used for cooking over the fire.
L - livestock - animals caught and raised for meat.
M - maple syrup - a bucket was used to collect and store maple syrup.
N - native american - in Canada called First Nations.
O - oil lamp - used to light the inside of houses and on wagons.
P - plow - farm equipment used to dig so seeds can be planted.
Q - quilt - mom took old clothes and weaved them into a quilt.
R - railway - built by the pioneers for transporting goods.
S - slingshot - a tool for hunting or a toy.
T - trading post - a place to share items.
U - undergarments - used to be joined together now vest and pants.
V- viola - larger than a violin with a lower sound.
W - wagon - transport pulled by horses.
X - xmas - pioneers decorated the fireplace at Christmas.
Y - yoke - a piece of wood placed between two animals to separate them.
Z - zinc - was mined and used for monuments and tool heads.
We then completed our rosary project on Friday morning with the CWL from St Bonaventure Parish. Students we encouraged to choose their colours for the rosary and were given step by step directions on how to thread them onto the string. We shared the experience with Grade 3 students and we should have the rosaries back next week once Father David has blessed them all.
What a great week!
